Q: When should I have my extinguisher serviced?
A: Service requirements depend on the type of extinguisher you own. A typical ABC dry chemical extinguisher needs to undergo a strip down service at 6 years and a complete strip down and hydrostatic test at 12 years.
CO2, pressurized H2O and stainless steel ABC must undergo hydrostatic testing every 5 years.
CO2 extinguishers must undergo Transport Canada high pressure testing by an approved facility.

Ionization Smoke Alarms – Generally are more effective at detecting flaming fires, which consume combustibles quickly and spread rapidly. Sources of these fires include paper burning in a wastebasket, or grease fires on a stove.
Photoelectric Smoke Alarms – Generally are more effective at detecting smoldering fires, which smolder for hours before bursting into flame. Sources of the fires include cigarette smoldering in couches or bedding.
For maximum protection, install both types of smoke alarms on every level of the home.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), recommends one Smoke Alarm on every floor, in every sleeping area, and in every bedroom. In new construction, the Smoke Alarms must be AC powered and interconnected. See “Agency Placement Recommendations” for details. For additional coverage, it is recommended that you install a Smoke Alarm in all rooms, halls, storage areas, finished attics, and basements, where temperatures normally remain between 40° F (4° C) and 100° F (38° C). Make sure no door or other obstruction could keep smoke from reaching the Smoke Alarms.
